Reminder: Sunday Kicks Off the Big Blue Test

Sunday, October 14th kicks off this year’s Big Blue Test. It is simple to do – test your blood sugar, exercise for 14 to 20 minutes, test your blood sugar again and then record the results on the Big Blue Test website. By doing so, you will be helping those in need around the world. For every test done (and entered of course), Roche donates $5 to the Diabetes Hand Foundation, who then in turn contributes the money to organizations around the world that provide supplies and services to diabetics. You are not only helping those in need, you are helping your blood sugar.

The Big Blue Test runs from October 14th to November 14th – if you participate every day, that amounts to $160 that Roche will donate to the Diabetes Hand Foundation on your behalf. As Kim likes to say, “You Can Do This!

I had some concerns about being able to participate this year since I can’t walk or put weight on my foot, and Mike Lawson of What Some Would Call Lies was kind enough to find a set of exercises that you can do at your desk. You can view those here. Really, there are not too many of us that have a “good excuse” not to participate.  I am using a wheelchair to offload my foot and I plan to participate.

  1. I enjoy taking part in the Big Blur Test, but I do have one problem with it. We expect to see the numbers drop after the exercise, and we want to think that the exercise caused that drop. There are, however, some people who will have insulin on board or have recently eaten some food, either of which will affect the blood sugar level. Food not accompanied by enough insulin could cause the blood sugar to rise after exercising. In order for the BBT to be as informative as possible, all participants should be urged to take the test when they do not have any insulin on board, and have not eaten any food within the last hour or so.,

    • That is very true Richard! Plus, some exercises like lifting weights can cause a BS rise right after then go lower hours later. I am worried I won’t see a drop because the kind of exercise I have to do this year.
