My Dickens’ Village 2012

Dickens Village Castle SectionI uploaded the video for my village back on the 14th, but with everything going on with bad insulin and being sick, didn’t get a chance to share it here. Prior to finishing the video, I had to do some village reconstruction. I had a doctor’s appointment in Pittsburgh on the 7th and when I came home, I discovered Hurricane Alex had hit while I was gone. A lot of people and trees were knocked over – I guess in his attempt to try and get to the window. Everyone asks about the cat and the village but not the dog!

I am happy with the way the river came out – it looks much better than the blue felt I used before! One year for Christmas, my sister bought me The Locomotive Shed & Water Tower (the little piece sitting on the river). When I was putting trees in and covering wires, I had moved it and set it on the river then decided it actually should be sitting on the river. That worked out pretty good!

I have an overall picture of the village below and the video below that:

Making a River for My Dickens’ Village

EnviroTex Lite RiverBack in 2004, I bought the Tower Bridge of London for my village and ever since then, I have been trying to figure out how to make a river. The best that I could do was a piece of blue felt but I wanted something better.

Last winter, I stumbled upon a message board for train people and read some of the techniques that they use to make a river. The most liked material seemed to be something called EnviroTex Lite. There was also a lot of discussion about the need to follow the instructions to the T. You had to mix two things in exactly equal parts or it would not turn out. I decided that I wanted to try it anyway.

This summer, I baked a few things and realized how hard it was for me to get things measured out exactly because my hands are so shaky. I decided that using something that needed measured exactly probably wasn’t going to work for me. It is one thing to put a little too much flour or milk in something but another when something really needs to be exact. I ordered a different product that some people had success with but other people didn’t like it. It didn’t work for me. I ordered yet another product and that didn’t work either.

Wordless Wednesday (Sort of): Let There Be Water

Ever since I bought the London Bridge for my village back in 2004, I have wanted to make a more realistic looking river to flow under the bridge. This year, I landed on a train site and the guys there wanted realistic scenery for their display so I finally found out how to do it. Of course I deiced to try the easy stuff and it didn’t work so I ended up ordering what I originally planned on getting but talked myself out of – EnviroTex Lite. It wasn’t as hard to use as I thought it would be and it doesn’t look too bad. I am going to add some rocks around the edges of the river.  Of course, this is only one small section and I will “piece” it together!

A Dickens’ Christmas

I finally finished my village on Saturday. I was starting to think I wasn’t going to get done, but I made it! I made a video and uploaded that to YouTube on Saturday and have inserted that below. I also wanted to have more detailed pictures to share here.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Caught in the Act

I have been working on my village and am slowly getting there. I wanted to take a pic of the progress so far so left the room to get my camera. Apparently the cat decided to go under the tree when I left. When I came back, she came out from under the tree. I didn’t realize I had her in the picture until I downloaded the pictures.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

No D Day

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens …

OK, maybe I don’t like all the things that Julie Andrews sang about in the Sound of Music, but the song gets off to a good start.

Music is one of the things at the top of my list. As a kid, I remember music playing a lot in our house. When I was old enough to buy my own music, my mother threatened to “break” the next record I brought into the house. She had a stack of old 78s up in the attic so I am not quite sure what she expected from me! I have gone from vinyl to CDs to digital in my lifetime. I like a variety of music. You walk in my house and you can hear Celine Dion followed by Metallica. I have songs that are in other languages and I have no clue what the words are, but the music is good so I play them.
